Our Story

A Home Away From Home

Where children discover the joy of learning at their own pace — guided by a teacher who has dedicated her life to the work.

Established 2012

Serving Families Since 2012

Little Bunnies Montessori School began in 2012 as a small home-based daycare in Covina, founded by Ms. Sakuntala "Saku" Abeyasekera — an experienced Montessori teacher with a vision. She wanted to create a place that felt less like a school and more like a family.

In 2018, after years of growing trust with families across the San Gabriel Valley, Ms. Saku opened our beautiful Alhambra campus at 405 North Stoneman Avenue. Today, Little Bunnies serves children from 18 months to six years old in an intentionally small classroom that has stayed true to its original purpose: a place where every child is truly known, every parent is a partner, and every day is a chance to nurture not just academic skills, but the whole child.

Ms. Saku

Founder · Director · AMI-Trained Montessori Directress

Ms. Saku has spent her life learning what helps children flourish. She came to Montessori not as a methodology but as a calling — a recognition that children carry within them everything they need to grow, if only the adults around them are patient enough to let it unfold.

Trained by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), Ms. Saku holds a Bachelor's degree in Education, a diploma in Child Psychology, and both Basic and Advanced Early Childhood Education certifications from UCLA. She has completed more than 80 child development units.

Before founding Little Bunnies, she spent a decade as a Montessori teacher at Foothill Progressive Montessori School in La Cañada. Every family who has walked through our doors knows her by name, and she knows their child by name, by temperament, and by the small joys that make them light up.

"I believe every child carries a beautiful gift inside them. Our job is to create the space — and the patience — for that gift to unfold."

Our Philosophy

Developing the Whole Child

Dr. Maria Montessori spent her life observing children and discovered something quietly radical: that children are not empty vessels waiting to be filled, but capable, curious learners who develop best when given freedom, the right materials, and a patient guide.

🏠

Independence

Children learn to care for themselves, their materials, and their classroom from the earliest years. Pouring water, buttoning a coat, putting away one's own work — small victories that build a lifetime of confidence.

💡

Curiosity

Hands-on Montessori materials invite children to discover concepts naturally and joyfully. There is no "right answer" to chase — there is only the next question, the next discovery, the next idea.

💛

Compassion

A multicultural, inclusive classroom where children learn empathy and respect as daily practice — not as a lesson. They learn to wait their turn, comfort a friend, and celebrate one another.

Our Approach to Discipline

Gentle, Constructive, Always

Children at Little Bunnies never receive physical punishment. Our discipline is gentle, positive, and always immediate — a quiet conversation rather than a raised voice, a guided redirection rather than a consequence.

We believe that every challenging behavior is a child's way of communicating something they don't yet have the words for. Our role is to listen, to set firm and consistent limits, and to help every child build the social and emotional skills they'll carry for life.

A Multicultural Home

Open to All, Welcoming All

Little Bunnies is proudly multicultural and inclusive. Our families come from many backgrounds, speak many languages at home, and celebrate many traditions — and our classroom is richer for it.

We do not discriminate based on race, color, ethnic origin, religion, family structure, or any other dimension of who a family is. Every child who walks through our doors is welcomed as they are.

Partnership

Parents Are Our Partners

The relationship between a child's home and their classroom is the most important factor in their early development. At Little Bunnies, we treat parents as partners — not customers.

Throughout the year, we host monthly parent conferences with workshops on discipline, hands-on learning, nutrition, and literacy. Our Parent Advisory Board meets monthly. We celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day together as a community. When you enroll, you become part of something larger than a school.
